Through the Eyes of Margaret Cousins:

Irish and Indian Suffragette

Keith Munro

2018

About: Margaret (Gretta) Cousins, great-aunt of the author, and her husband James founded the Irish Women's Franchise League along with the Sheehy-Skeffingtons in 1908 in Ireland. They were both Theosophists as well as vegetarians.

They emigrated to India in 1915 invited by Mrs Annie Besant, President of the Theosophical Society. Gretta helped to found the All-India Women's Conference and became the first non-Indian female magistrate.

She met with Martha Root in Kerala and Mrs Shirin Fozdar was the Persian delegate to the first All Asian Women's Conference in 1931, also founded by Gretta. The Greatest Holy Leaf sent a message to that Conference.

Gretta had the honour of an audience with Shoghi Effendi in 1932 on her way back to India. This book is a summary of their diaries and memories which were published under the title of We Two Together in Madras (1950).
