Learnt Steps by Sonja van Kerkhoff, 1992

stills from the video

1994, 2 min, sound: footsteps that are reminescent of a heartbeat, which fade in and out. Text: English. Performers: Natasha Rodenburg & Fiona de Bell

The images focus on the interactions between two pairs of feet on a seemingly neutral floor. One pair of feet are bare and the other pair wear shoes. Sometimes the feet follow each other, and sometimes they push against each other. The intensity of the relationship between the two is maintained by close shots, a moving text that refers to one's position or place (such as to step down or last and first step), and by the varying sound of heartbeat-like stepping.
