Where did the academy begin?
The first Academy was held in August 1993 with 25 participants and three courses. It was initially a response to the interest shown in the performing arts by the youth and junior youth, who had formed the Youth Quake performing groups.
In 1998 twelve options were offered in a wide range of arts subjects. Two independent groups of artists also benefited from the time and space to develop their own particular art forms.
In 1999 nine academy courses were offered in a wide range of arts subjects, and three special interest groups connected to the Bahá´í Faith; The Training Institute for England, BASED-UK, and ABS(ESE) ran programmes during the same period.

What is the Academy philosophy?
The following quote from Bahá'u'lláh, expresses the core of our philosophy!

The purpose of the one true God ... in revealing Himself unto men, is to lay bare those gems that lie hidden within the mine of their true and inmost selves.

We believe that everyone, without exception has hidden gems. What we aim to offer at the Academy is the opportunity and the environment to discover and polish them. Whether a student is just discovering their gems or the gems are already cut and polished, they are accepted and respected for wherever they are at that moment in time.
The Academy aims to provide an environment that promotes excellence, is spiritually empowering, artistically challenging and personally nurturing.

Where is the Academy held?
In 1998 we have moved to Sidcot School in Somerset. It is a beautiful venue, set in the Somerset countryside. The Academy has the use of all the specialist facilities, including a magnificent sports facility of sports hall and swimming pool. The food is excellent with a salad bar provided at every main meal. The Accommodation is varied and can cater for most needs, as well as wheelchair access.

Who are the students?
Anyone interested in the arts! You don't have to consider yourself an artist to come to the academy! Many consider they have little or no artistic talent, but we also welcome those with confidence and experience because an environment of mutual respect is created where everyone feels safe to explore their chosen art form to gain the maximum for themselves, whatever their starting point.

Our courses are offered to students of eleven years upwards, with no upper limit, we always have a broad age range, from the eleven year olds to students in their eighties. Students within the 11 - 14 age range follow courses specifically designed for them, whilst those of 15 plus have a wide choice of options within the adult programme.

What is the structure of the week?
All students following tutored courses have two sessions per day, two hours in the morning and afternoon, this is followed by free time, when the sports facilities are available. Each evening a guest artist or performer is invited to share their art with all the participants and guests who join the Academy for the evening sessions. Those participants working independently create their own timetable. All participants are invited to present their ´work in progress´ at the end of the week.
